Frequently asked questions
What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout that uses a specialized piece of equipment called a Reformer. The Reformer uses springs, a sliding carriage, and straps to create resistance and assistance, allowing for a wide variety of challenging and effective exercises. Unlike mat Pilates, the Reformer provides a more dynamic and targeted workout, helping you build long, lean muscles, improve your posture, and increase your core strength in a low-impact way.
Is Pilates good for beginners?
Absolutely. Pilates is one of the most beginner-friendly workouts available because it is low-impact and highly adaptable. At Core Society, our expert instructors are trained to work with all fitness levels. We will guide you through every movement, ensuring you are using proper form and feeling successful from your very first class. We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, non-intimidating environment where beginners can thrive.
What should I wear to class?
We recommend wearing comfortable, form-fitting athletic wear that allows you to move freely. Think yoga pants, leggings, or fitted shorts and a comfortable top. This allows our instructors to see your alignment and ensure you are moving safely. For safety and hygiene, grip socks are required and are available for purchase at the studio if you do not have your own.
How often should I do Pilates to see results?
For best results, we recommend practicing Pilates 2-3 times per week. This consistency allows your body to adapt, build muscle memory, and create lasting changes in your strength, posture, and flexibility. Many of our members who attend 3+ times per week report feeling a significant transformation in how their body looks and feels within the first month.
What are the main benefits of Pilates?
The benefits of a consistent Pilates practice are extensive. Our members often experience:
- Increased Core Strength: A strong core is the foundation of all movement.
- Improved Posture & Flexibility: Stand taller and move with more grace and ease.
- Reduced Back Pain: By strengthening the deep stabilizing muscles of your core and back.
- Long, Lean Muscle Tone: Create a strong, sculpted physique without bulk.
- Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: The focus on breath and precise movement reduces stress and improves mental clarity.
Do I need to bring anything to class?
Just bring yourself, a water bottle, and a positive attitude! We provide all the equipment you will need, including the Reformer and any props. As a reminder, grip socks are required for all classes.
Can Pilates help me lose weight?
While Pilates is not a high-intensity cardio workout, it can be a valuable part of a weight loss journey. Pilates builds lean muscle mass, which in turn increases your metabolism and helps you burn more calories at rest. When combined with a healthy diet and complementary cardio, Pilates is an excellent way to create a strong, toned, and healthy body.
What is the difference between Mat and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses your own body weight as resistance, making it a great way to learn the fundamentals. Reformer Pilates, which is what we specialize in at Core Society, uses the spring-based resistance of the Reformer machine. This adds a whole new level of challenge and assistance, allowing for a wider range of exercises and more targeted muscle engagement. Most people find Reformer Pilates to be more dynamic and effective for building strength quickly.
Will I be sore after my first class?
It is common to feel a bit of muscle soreness a day or two after your first class, especially in muscles you didn’t even know you had! This is a good sign—it means you challenged your body in a new way. The soreness should be mild and will lessen as your body adapts and gets stronger.
Can I do Pilates if I have an injury or am pregnant?
In many cases, yes. Pilates is often recommended by physical therapists for injury rehabilitation because it is low-impact and focuses on controlled, precise movements. However, it is essential that you consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise program. If you are cleared for exercise, please inform your instructor of any injuries or if you are pregnant before class so they can provide appropriate modifications to keep you safe.
How is Pilates different from yoga?
While both Pilates and yoga are mind-body practices that improve flexibility and strength, they have different origins and focuses. Yoga typically involves flowing from one static pose to another, with a strong emphasis on spiritual and meditative practices. Pilates focuses on dynamic, controlled movements originating from the core, with a primary goal of improving functional strength, posture, and stability. At Core Society, we use the Reformer to add resistance and challenge to these movements.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a 12-hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel your class, please do so at least 12 hours in advance to avoid losing the class credit. This allows us to offer the spot to another member on the waitlist. You can easily cancel through your Walla account or our studio app.
